Saturday, July 17, was very busy with contractions starting about 1:30 AM. Beans was delivering pups by 3:45 AM in about 15 minute intervals. We were expecting a big litter as she was huge a full week before the pups came. I thought a full blown explosion could occur at any time! The first four pups came with no problems-3 boys and a girl ranging from 12-15 oz. Sadly, they were followed by three little girls weighing only 8 oz, who were stillborn. By the second pup we were on the phone with our reproduction vet. Since there was nothing outwardly abnormal about the pups, the delivery, or the placenta she told us to hang in a see if the next pup was alive. When the third pup was dead we called again in a pretty good panic. The vet felt we should still wait one more pup (it was apparent by the size of Beans there were still several more to come.) Finally, the next pup born was fine and she was followed by six more-fourteen in all! We all suspect conditions were too crowded for so many pups carried to full term. We took the three pups in for the vet to look at and are waiting for the results-but we are guessing there will be nothing conclusive.
As of today, Tuesday, all the pups have gained 3-4 ounces and are doing great along with their mom. Eleven pups are plenty for Beans to feed and care for and to date they have not required any supplementing. Dewclaws were removed today. Another interesting feature was that all the pups had rear dewclaws along with the standard fronts. Paul Jensen tells me that some of the Danish dogs have rear dewclaws and he has always had some in his litters-new to me!
If I can ever figure out how to post pictures I will share.
